In the last two weeks, Maharashtra Chief Minister has been mulling imposition lockdown in the state and warning the people of such an eventuality. On Sunday, the Maharashtra government imposed night curfew and weekend lockdown across the state, shutting down all “non-essential” services including restaurants, bars, and malls. Many labourers in Pune planned to leave for home, fearing another lockdown, as seen in increased passengers travelling in north-bound trains from Pune. …

The British entered India in 1608, on the pretext of trade. Within years, they fought multiple battles with the regional kings, and began expanding their horizon to ultimately become colonial rulers of the subcontinent. While the East India Company governed India from 1757 to 1857, the Crown took over direct control in 1857, that carries the milestone of India’s First War of Independence. …

As Europe emerged from the turmoil of interstate wars, it saw rise in population and immense competition in markets. Ideas of scientific enquiry and empiricism started to gain ground and there was an urge to figure out how the Earth works. Moreover, in the 15th century, the Ottoman empire held strong in the territories held by the Roman empire. Hence, the European powers were in a hassle to reach new lands and resources where there wouldn’t be a threat from the Ottoman empire…

Factors behind the rise of Capitalist Agriculture and Industrialisation
Over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, England and in turn, subsequently, Europe was at the forefront of virtually an agricultural revolution of sorts which involved immense changes involving land tenure, the organisation of production on farms, techniques employed in farming, and ultimately the overall productivity levels of agriculture (Maček, J. (1993). Hence, the sixteenth century essentially represented a spectacular change in English rural life: primarily to do with the emergence of the capitalist farm at the expense of small scale peasant cultivators, the pointed…
National Education Policy (NEP)- 2020 is the most comprehensive policy document of India in the last 34 years. It signals the government intent and the direction of educational reforms in India. But it is not an educational Act and hence can’t be justiciable in court. NEP calls for a drastic restructuring of higher education- moving away from the British model of higher education (3-year undergraduate and 4–5 professionals colleges fragmented along with areas and levels) which we followed since 1854.
The seeds of NEP-2020 higher education reforms were sown in 2009 when the Yash Pal Committee (YPC) submitted its report…

The National Education Policy 2020 announced on July 31 has re-triggered the debate on mother tongue instruction at the primary stage. While educationalists point to numerous studies that show the advantages of learning in the mother tongue at the early ages, English continues to find support from a large section of Indians as the preferred medium of instruction. The widespread Anglophilia of Indians (not surprisingly) can be traced to the expansion of English education in the colonial era.

Throughout history, India’s linguistic and cultural diversity has been considered the subcontinent’s greatest resource. This resource, however, has presented the Indian government with obstacles that have tried and tested its democratic values and institutions. In order for the state to function cohesively, a common medium of communication or a ‘link language’ was required. As with any other issue that involves groups with vested interests, the issue of deciding upon India’s lingua franca attracted controversy ever since Independence. At the center of this controversy was the debate over whether Hindi (the Sanskritized version of Hindustani) should replace English as the official…

The formative years of education play a crucial role in a child’s life. They influence the way in which children perceive their environment and the relations they form with those who occupy them. Among the various tools used within a classroom, school textbooks play a significant role in shaping children’s worldview. This brings us to question, whether school textbooks are inclusive of the differences that occur within a student’s surroundings, especially in a multicultural country like India?
